Ex-employee or corporate alumni Businesses embracing former workers

Ex-employee or corporate alumni Businesses embracing former workersEx-employee or corporate alumni Businesses embracing former workersIt used to be that when you left a job, you were gone. Perhaps you kept in touch with a couple of work friends, pinged your boss for a reference when changing jobs, and maybe even referred someone to a job when you heard about an opening. But that was it.Corporations have been changing that realizing the value of former employees that theyve already put time and resources into, theyre doing it with corporate alumni programs. In fact, 8% of Fortune 1,000 companies have corporate alumni programs, reports Quartz at Work in a story about the trend.Welcome back to the old jobWhat does it mean to be an alumnus of your former corporation, and what does do you both get out of it?For ex-employees, there are reunions, and networking opportunities, and discounts. For corporations, former employees offer something even more valuable they are viewed as customers, b rand ambassadors, sources of referrals, and even future employees, writes Quartz.Come back or stayMicrosoftis an example of a corporate alumni program done right 15% of Microsofts hires are boomerangs, meaning employees who left and came back.Called the Microsoft Alumni Network, it is its own nonprofit group not associated with Microsoft. How to Meet Influencers - The Muse

How to Meet Influencers - The MuseHow to Meet Influencers If youre anything like me, you get pretty jealous when you hear about a friend or colleague who has managed to build a relationship with a well-known influencer. Its easy to think, Gee, Im smart and motivated too. Why cant I have that kind of relationship with an important person? And sure, the reality is that tzu siche are certain people in your field that youll have to get really lucky just to be around, let alone network with. But there are also some really interesting and knowledgeable people who dont have millions of followers, and a book, and a verified check mark on Twitter who you can get to know, too. Youll just need to think a bit outside the box to get a foot in the door. Here are a few tips to help you do just that. 1. Rethink Your Definition of an Important PersonOK, so you could make the decision that you want to meet important people in your field, but only if they have all the influence. And thats fine, but it would be unfair to say that these people are the only significant people you could meet. Instead of focusing only on these power players, reconsider your definition of what this person looks like. Is she influential in your field? Do you respect his opinions on some really important matters? Do you want to learn from her experience? Think about the types of questions that are important to you, and youll quickly realize that a persons social media following doesnt determine his or her importance alone. 2. Find Out Where They Hang Out Online- and EngageI know what youre thinking, and yes- not getting a response from someone on any of these platforms hurts, even if you knew the odds were low. But, the truth is that even if someone very important and influential doesnt have one million Twitter followers, odds are that he or she wont just publicly post a home phone number for interested networkers either. Its up to you to go to where they are and do your best to start the conversation. W hile it would be easy to assume that important people will simply ignore you, this is absolutely not always true. In fact, even some of those leaders with large followings can be pretty responsive on social media, so take a leap and strike up a conversation. 3. Ask for an Informational Coffee MeetingAfter a while of engaging with important people online, it would be easy to say, Hey, I did it This person knows I exist Time to celebrate And yes, that wouldnt be unreasonable. But, if youve built a relationship with someone who also happens to live in the same city, its perfectly OK to take another leap and ask for some time to pick his or her brain. In person. Over coffee, which you should pay for, even if this person makes a lot more money than you. As scary as that might sound, remember that youve taken the time to get to know him or her online- and in all likelihood, he or shes used to getting this kind of request anyway. So, its not like youll shock him or her into silence. Its eas y to see the benefits of getting to know important people. Obviously they have some knowledge to impart on you, and could even open up some interesting career opportunities. But, if youre typically scared of pursuing these relationships like I am, that might sound ridiculous. However, the worst case scenario? That person says no. But, if youre respectful in the way you pursue the opportunities to meet some influential folks, theres no harm in at least making the effort. And youll likely be pleasantly surprised by the outcome more than once. Photo of man on computer courtesy of Shutterstock.

4 Biggest Workplace Fears and how to Control Them

4 Biggest Workplace Fears and how to Control Them 4 Biggest Workplace Fears and how to Control Them 1. Fear of public speaking. This is arguably the no. 1 workplace fear and can prevent people from progressing into leadership roles or sales roles if this fear cant be overcome. Theres obviously a lot of advice on this topic on the internet, but I like this mayoclinic advice, largely because of its simplicity and relaxing tone. (How could you be stressed after reading that? It makes it sound so easy.) The eight key tenets to combat fear of public speaking were know your topic, get organized in advance, practice and practice more, do some deep breathing, focus on the material not the audience, dont be afraid of a moments silence and recognize your success. Their final tip is to get untersttzung by joining a public speaking group, like Toastmasters.2. Asking your boss for a pay raise. Another big fear that employees have is asking for a raise. This is a fear of the unknown and a fear of rejection. The truth is its perfectly okay to ask for a raise, and it can support your career aims if done in the right way. What people often fear is that they dont know the right way to ask for a raise. So, the advice here is simple If you want to ask for a raise, prepare a business case showing your positive contribution and achievements over the past year and perhaps make an economic case showing the market rate for this position. Once the case is prepared, schedule a meeting with your manager, prepare a script for yourself and present your case to your boss. Dont fear rejection. If you are rejected, simply see this as an opportunity to ask your boss what specific improvements you need to make to be considered for a pay raise.3. Interviews. Interviews are one of the biggest fears that candidates and employees can face, but once, again there are many steps you can take to control your fears. The two big fears here are fear of the unknown and fear of failure. Control your fear of the unknown by demystifying the organization and interview process by carefully researching the role the likely interview questions and models answers the hiring managers and interviewers and preparing your own questions. Remove the unknown and youll remove much of your fear. If you feel better prepared and better equipped youll feel more confident of success, which will mitigate some of the fear of failure.4. Fear of losing your job. This is a big fear that all of us can have at one point or another, and this can be mitigated in two ways. Check that your fear of losing your job is actually justified, or is it paranoia? Are you performing well? Is the company performing well or okay? If there is some genuine job instability then look at your companys layoff/dismissal policy to see what notice/ severance you may be entitled to. You may find that you have a safety cushion of two or three months in the company on top of your own savings safety cushion. You should be able to find a job within this time, meaning there is a mindestens chance of you being penniless and this could mitigate your fear of losing your current job. If you do find you have a minimal safety cushion, consider getting a flexible work-at-home second job to provide more stability.

ASME to Issue Two New Books Next Month

ASME to Issue Two New Books Next Month ASME to Issue Two New Books Next Month ASME to Issue Two New Books Next Month Two new books - a publication on the topic of lean engineering education and a supplement to a design handbook published last year - are scheduled to be released by ASME through its ASME Press imprint next month. Both titles can be pre-ordered now on ASME.org Lean Engineering Education: Driving Content and Competency Mastery, by Shannon Flumerfelt, Franz-Josef Kahlen, Anabela Alves and Anna Bella Siriban-Manalang, addresses the need for the restructuring of engineering education, as called for by recent studies such as Vision 2030 by ASME and Vision 2025 by the America Society of Civil Engineering. These studies indicate that many engineering graduates have a poor grasp of systems thinking and systems analysis skills, sustainability issues, problem solving skills, multi-disciplinary team-working skills, as well as a lack of leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, and project management skills. The 144-page book includes an analysis of current shortfalls in engineering education and education related to professional practice in engineering. The authors also describe desirable improvements as well as advocacy for the use of lean tenets and tools to create a new future for engineering education. The publication blends the perspectives and expertise of mechanical, industrial and production engineers and academics - as well as the social sciences viewpoint - on the challenges encountered in engineering education, providing a well-rounded assessment of how lean thinking can address shortcomings in engineering education. The second new title, Supplement to Fluid Mechanics, Water Hammer, Dynamic Stresses and Piping Design, features recommended additions and corrections to the original publication, which was released by ASME Press last year. This 134-page supplement includes improvements and corrections to the text of the original book, which was used to teach four separate classes of engineers at the Department of Energys Savannah River Site (SRS) prior to its publication. Comments from these classes, intended to improve the quality of the presentations, have been incorporated into this addendum, which also includes the appendices A Discussion of DLFs for Piping Design and Design of Piping Systems for Dynamic Loads from Fluid Transients. Print and digital copies of Lean Engineering Education: Driving Content and Competency Mastery can be pre-ordered by ASME members for $47 and by nonmembers for $59 by visiting www.asme.org/products/books/lean-engineering-education. The Supplement to Fluid Mechanics, Water Hammer, Dynamic Stresses and Piping Design can be pre-ordered by members for $31 and by nonmembers for $39 at www.asme.org/products/books/supplement-fluid-mechanics-water-hammer-dynamic. Should you Quit Your Job for Sports Games

Should you Quit Your Job for Sports Games Should you Quit Your Job for Sports Games I ask these questions because a Red Sox fan recently quit his job to attend Game 1 of the World Series in Boston. According to Yahoo! Sports, Gino Marcello, a former furniture salesman in Rochester, NY, quit his job after his boss refused to let him take off work to attend the big game. He said I couldnt take off this week because I didnt get him enough notice, Marcello said. I told him I wasnt coming in. And here I am. Marcello later said he’d find something new and it wasn’t worth it. The story even said that he brought a large sign with the words “I Quit my Job for This” written across it to the stadium. Now, another site recently updated this story with details that may show that Marcello worked at a family owned business; so, his “quitting” may not be all that it seems. But the question still remains whether or not it is justifiable (and a wise decision) to quit one’s job for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? I don’t follow baseball, so let’s use the popular television show “American Idol” for an example. Say a woman, we’ll call her Ashley, learns that the TV show plans to host auditions for one day only in her current city. Ashley has high hopes of becoming a famous singer and she regularly sings around the local community trying to promote herself. Ashley goes to her manager at a local retail store and asks for the ‘audition day’ off. Her manager refuses. Following her passion and believing the chance that this opportunity will present itself again is slim to none, Ashley goes to the audition anyway and ends up losing her retail position. Was following her heart worth it? While I believe the answer to this question is subjective, I do think there are a few objective things one can do before deciding to quit his/her job in general. Below are just four: 1. Make sure you have another job. This obviously won’t work for those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, but if you’re a worker feeling restless, bored and unchallenged (and/or unappreciated) on the job, you may want to secure another position before quitting. The job market is tough nowadays, and you don’t want to be unemployed for a long period of time because you didn’t adequately prepare yourself. 2. Ensure you have enough savings. Oftentimes, people will quit their jobs and not think about their financial states. Even if one has a new job, you need to think about the transition period. Will there be a gap between your last paycheck and your first paycheck from your new employer? If so, do you have enough money to cover all your expenses during that time? The same is true should you decide to disregard point no.1 and quit your job without having a new role. Making sure you have enough money saved to cover all your expenses while unemployed will be one less MAJOR headache for you to deal with. 3. Reevaluate your motives. When you feel like you want to quit your job, it’s good to pause and reevaluate your motives. A lot of times people make irrational decisions based off their feelings. Take some time to really examine your reasoning behind wanting to quit in order to help you uncover if leaving the company 1) is necessary or 2) has to be immediate. 4. Look at the big picture. This is similar to point 3 when it comes to acting off your current feelings. It’s good to get out of your emotions and think about the bigger picture. Is your job helping you achieve your career goals? How will quitting affect your progress toward your future plans? It’s important to remember your end goal to ensure that leaving a job now won’t negatively affect you and your career later.

15 Secrets to Writing a Great Resume

15 Secrets to Writing a Great Resume 15 Secrets to Writing a Great Resume Yikes, there’s a lot of resume advice floating around out there! Some good, some not so good and we understand it has to leave you wondering about the best approach. So, where do you start? Here’s a list of 15 tips that we’ve compiled to help you get started. Don’t get freaked out: Many new or experienced job seekers stress out when it comes to preparing or updating a resume. Stop stressing and seek out the necessary help you need to create a great resume that will gain potential employers interest. Get really focused: Don’t forget that employers are quickly sifting through many resumes, giving each just a few seconds. They should be able to immediately grasp what you’re all about and what you can contribute to the organization. Focus on your key strengths that position you to meet a specific need and target specific employers/jobs. Remember, employers don’t consider resumes that do not focus on their job’s specific requirements. They expect your resume to be laser focused to the position you’re applying for. Don’t make them wade through copious text to find out what you’re good at, it just won’t happen! Use rich keywords: If your resume happens to fall into an Applicant Tracking System, your resume must feature cutting-edge industry jargon in the form of keywords. Not sure what those keywords are? Contact us today, we’ll walk you through the whole process. Be reader friendly: Your printed resume must be clean yet eye-catching. Use conservative, easy-to-read fonts, plenty of white space, a layout that doesn’t turn employers off and avoid instantly recognizable Microsoft Word resume templates. They’ve seen a million of them. Portray transferable skills: Show the employer that your skills are polished and will contribute to the bottom line, even if you’re seeking a job that is completely different from what you’ve done in the past. Focus on what sets you apart: What special things did you do to set yourself apart in previous jobs? How did you do the job better? What did you do to make the position your own? What did you do to impress your boss? What challenges or problems did you face and overcome? What were the results? How did they benefit from your performance? Did you leave them off better than before you worked for them? Spotlight selling points: Information should be listed in order of importance to the reader. What’s generally most important is your title/position. Here is a preferred list order: Title/position, name of employer, city/state of employer, dates of employment. You should also consider whether your education or your experience is your best-selling point and which should be listed first. Generally, brand-new graduates list education first, while job-seekers with a few years of experience list experience first. Don’t hide your skills: If a certain skill is relevant to your field, don’t bury it at the bottom of your resume. List them in the summary or profile section at the top. This allows the reader to catch it in the first third of the document. This also goes for languages that might be important to the type of job you seek. State your personal brand: Your career identity, authenticity, essence, passion and image should be expressed in your resume. You should also include the promise of the value you will bring to a potential employer. A consistent branded message should be woven throughout your resume that defines who you are, why they should hire you and your promise of value. Make a sales pitch: You must be able to answer this question in your resume: Why should I hire you over any other candidate? Uniqueness is clearly related to both branding and focus. If you convey a sharp focus in your resume, the reader instantly visualizes you in the position. If it’s branded, your resume immediately communicates your value promise. To take it to the next level, the uniqueness factor should portray you as the best person for the position. It should say, “This person really gets it.” Get rid of the clutter: Don’t use unnecessary dates, parentheses, articles (“a,” “an,” “the”). Most of these aren’t needed and remove the “References available upon request” because it is a given that you will provide references upon request. Structure stories in reverse: Since your resume only gets a few seconds, tell your story backwards. Grab the reader’s attention by giving away the ending. Quantify: Metrics that provide tangible evidence of your results thrill potential employers, i.e. Using metrics that show in percentages what you’ve done to increase sales or cut costs. Spell and grammar check: Proofread, proofread, proofread then set it aside and proofread it again. Then have a friend, spouse or colleague proofread it again. Kill any chance of employers reading a misspelled, grammatically flawed resume. Keep it fresh: Change your resume as needed, it shouldn’t be this static, stagnant document that’s been sitting in a drawer for the past two years. The minute you start a new job, update your resume and track your accomplishments so you can add them. Resume writing might not be easy but don’t let it overwhelm you. If you still feel like you can’t do it, give us a call, we’re happy to help!

4 Tips to Help Financial Institutions Stay on Target With Regulatory Compliance

4 Tips to Help Financial Institutions Stay on Target With Regulatory Compliance 4 Tips to Help Financial Institutions Stay on Target With Regulatory Compliance The level of regulatory scrutiny placed on financial institutions has increased dramatically in recent years, and compliance is a top-of-mind concern for management. Rightly so, as noncompliance can be incredibly costly in terms of potential financial and legal repercussions, brand and reputation damage, and loss of market share. From improper segregation of duties for employees accessing financial systems to the tiniest leak of sensitive data, many things can come under scrutiny during a regulatory compliance audit for a financial institution. Senior executives and managers therefore need to ensure all staff members are up to speed on what can - but must not - go wrong. Here are four suggestions to help your organization be  at the ready  for a regulatory compliance audit, and  better able to stay on  target with compliance requirements: 1. Provide the necessary staff training The regulatory landscape for financial institutions is constantly evolving. Even the well-established Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), which celebrated its 13th birthday this summer, is still changing due to shifts in how SOX compliance is governed and regulated. Your team needs to understand how dynamic regulations can affect - and potentially disrupt - day-to-day business. More important, they must understand what they can do, in their specific roles, to help the organization ensure it stays in compliance and prepare for an audit. Offer the training your professionals need to stay up to date on current requirements, and establish a communication framework for transmitting the newest information. Then, periodically quiz them for comprehension through one-to-one and broader staff meetings. 2. Conduct regular ‘internal audits’ Don’t expect the internal audit team to handle all aspects of making sure the organization is in compliance. Conduct your own “internal audit” in your department on a regular basis to help identify any potential noncompliance issues - before auditors do. Companies that don’t perform these proactive spot checks often cite lack of resources as an obstacle. But the costs of failing a regulatory compliance audit are likely to be far greater than devoting time and staff to confirm the organization isn’t making any missteps. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you go through a regulatory compliance audit, these assessments will ensure you are better prepared. You will have gained insights into the areas of the business in question and know how to address questions that arise. 3. Partner with your compliance team In addition to having ongoing dialogue with internal auditors about compliance, build a good working relationship with your compliance manager or team. They will know where to look for potential pitfalls. They can also recommend ways to tighten controls and what best practices to implement. Their expertise also can go a long way toward reducing compliance costs for the business. Many organizations, in an effort to keep those costs in check, are working to reduce the number of key controls for internal control over financial reporting (ICFR), for example. According to the Benchmarking the Accounting Finance Function report for 2015, published by Robert Half and Financial Executives Research Foundation (FERF), 79 percent of U.S. firms report that they are now using no more than 100 key controls for ICFR. 4. Invite a different perspective No matter how vigilant - and diligent - your team may be about helping the business to maintain regulatory compliance, blind spots are always a risk. Financial institutions are complex organizations. With so many moving parts, important details can be easily overlooked, and problems can multiply without anyone noticing - until it’s too late. Consider bringing in outside compliance experts who can offer an objective evaluation of your operation. Regardless of the size of your organization, dedicated consultants can help you adhere to all relevant compliance mandates for the financial services industry. In addition, they can recommend ways to improve compliance processes and ensure that financial systems are up to date and sound. What does your organization do to be prepared for a  regulatory compliance audit? 5 Things You Should Know Before Working at a Start-Up

5 Things You Should Know Before Working at a Start-Up 5 Things You Should Know Before Working at a Start-Up Working for a start-up is attractive- sometimes magnetically so. The job descriptions usually include phrases like “casual, fun office environment” and “room for rapid advancement.” And as you answer questions on their non-traditional job application (“If you were a reality TV show star, which one would you be?”), you imagine yourself balancing on a stability ball in yoga pants and a t-shirt, collaborating with like-minded colleagues over chai lattes. It’s true that joining a start-up can be a fun, smart, and even life-changing move. And while not all start-ups have the ambience (or the budgets) of sexy tech companies, and not all are run by a visionary who will put you on the fast-track to Facebook-like stock options, many new businesses offer a unique opportunity to learn the ins and outs of building an organization from the ground up.But it’s not all fun and ping-pong games with the company next door- there are some key differences between the start-up world and eve ry other type of company you’ve worked for. Memorize these five working-for-a-start-up mantras before you electronically sign on the dotted line.1. You’ll Need to be Comfortable With Change (Really, Really Comfortable)Unlike seasoned companies that have well-defined processes and procedures and hundreds of employees conditioned to repeat the same behaviors day after day, start-ups are able to make changes quickly. Things like job titles, desk assignments, reporting structures, and project plans are changed more frequently than the filter in the office coffee pot. At the start-up I work for, I’ve moved offices three- yes, three- times in under six months, and had a grand total of six different desks in the process. The constant change can be frustrating, especially when you’re just getting acclimated to the place or if you’ve come from a company entrenched in its ways. But to succeed at a start-up, you need to embrace chaos. Start-ups have their pick of motivated young profe ssionals, and they’re certainly not afraid of personnel shake-ups. Showing that you can easily roll with the punches is one way to ensure your success.2. It’s All Hands on DeckYou have to be a team player, dive right in, roll up your sleeves, and get your hands dirty- there’s an endless number of clichés to explain that you’ll be required to do pretty much everything when you work for a start-up. While you may technically have a title and a job description, your everyday activities will likely vary depending on the project du jour. You may have never imagined a day in which you stuff envelopes, pick up pizzas for lunch, answer phones, and present a proposal to the board of directors, all within a matter of hours, but the phrase “This isn’t part of my job description” should never cross your lips. Expect that you’ll be performing a variety of tasks, both mundane and challenging, and be ready and willing to do them. Too many start-up new hires make a rookie mistake: fo cusing on how the start-up will help them (and their resumes) instead of how they can contribute to the company. Start-ups are well stocked with driven, eager employees, and those that aren’t willing to be flexible, or to put the company first, will be swiftly offloaded (see #1).3. Veterans Are Mentors, Not EnemiesMost start-ups begin with a few brilliant individuals and an idea. They find some investors and surround themselves with smart, motivated (often young) people who will burn the midnight oil and turn their idea into reality. Then, when the company begins to get a whiff of success, they may bring in some experts: experienced, tenured professionals that will help take the company to the next level.Once veterans start hopping on board, existing employees can get nervous, and even resentful. You’ve been working 16-hour days for six months (yes, you should be expecting that, too), and suddenly this grandma is going to walk in and tell you how to do your job just because she has an MBA, an outstanding track record, and an endless network of industry contacts?Well, yes. Though you may feel threatened, remember that these experts are not your competition, they’re your potential mentors. In large companies, they’d be completely inaccessible- barricaded in an office, blocked by a receptionist and an espresso machine. But at a start-up, you’ll be able to interact and learn from them on a daily basis.4. The Company Giveth, the Company Taketh AwayStart-ups love to reward employees for their willingness to abandon office formalities like lunch breaks and personal space. When the company is relatively small, the executives might dole out perks like weekly happy hours, catered lunches, and tickets to local events. But as the company grows, the leadership might realize that they can no longer afford, or manage, these types of luxuries.A free drink may have once been the only respite in your otherwise hectic day- so when the freebies disappear, it can be dish eartening. But fear not: The departure of these gifts usually means the arrival of more practical bonuses, like health insurance.5. It’s Your Responsibility to Assess the RiskStart-ups can become shut-downs very quickly. It’s one of the inherent risks in working for one. And while you may assume that, as a member of a small team, you’ll be the first to know about potential landmines, this isn’t always the case. It’s your responsibility, whether you’re an intern or a financial analyst, to learn as much as you can about your company’s performance and trajectory. Read what the press is saying about the business and its investors (a Google alert is great for this) and ask leadership how they’re measuring their success. If things are going downhill, you don’t want to be blindsided. You should be noticing an overarching theme: Working for a start-up will require you to adjust your conception of the workday. You’ll be putting in longer days (and later nights), your respon sibilities will be fluid, and the company you devote most of your life to could blossom overnight or crash and burn. But if you accept your job for what it is (a promising opportunity to learn) and what it isn’t (a sure thing), working for a start-up can be a great way to kick-start your career.

On Steve Jobs, Santa Claus and Making Magic

On Steve Jobs, Santa Claus and Making Magic On Steve Jobs, Santa Claus and Making Magic Its taken me a few days to sort out my thoughts about Steve Jobs. His death affected me far more than I would have expected and Ive been trying to work out why. Yes I love my iMac and my Macbook Pro. And my iPad. And my iPod. But even though I love my Apple technology, I havent really seen myself as a true Apple fangirl and Ive given very little thought to Steve Jobs over the years. And yet Im crying Thats why finding my eyes filling with tears reading the obituaries came as a true surprise. Why was I scouring the web looking for more? Why did I feel this sense of real loss over someone I never gave much thought to while he was alive? Why did I feel so damn sad? And whats more, why was I not alone in this? The eulogies werent limited to tech blogs or the national newspapers. Every website I read commented on the news. Everybody I talked to mentioned it. Many of them were people who dont even own a single Mac product. And yet there we all were, sharing in a sense of global loss. Now Id Like to Show You Macintosh in Person I finally realized what it was while watching a video of a very young Steve Jobs announcing the first Macintosh computer, a machine that was to revolutionize all our lives by introducing the graphical user interface. In the video, Jobs relishes the big reveal, excited like a little child by the chance to show off its powers. And the audience is riveted. Howls and whoops of real excitement greet every special effect and when the machine actually talks, well the entire crowd jumps to its feet. And as they cheer, Jobs tries to keep from crying, his smile as wide as Ive ever seen it, his pride impossible to miss. Steve Jobs was Santa Claus And thats when it hit me. Steve Jobs was Santa Claus for adults. We dont get to be surprised very often once we leave childhood. We dont believe in fairies and magic and men who come down the chimney and leave us exciting presents. But in recent years, some of us had Steve Jobs. Every few years, we knew hed come out onto a darkened stage and hold up something brand new something we couldnt have even imagined until we saw it, but something we instantly knew would brighten our lives immeasurably. And somehow, even though we had no idea, he knew it was exactly what wed always wanted, and he was thrilled to share it with us. The magical new invention was never something we needed. It wouldnt help do the chores, or cook our meals, or heal us if we got sick. Instead, just like the best childhood Christmas presents, it was all about fun and filled with possibility. And so with Steves passing, weve lost a lot more than another rich CEO. Weve lost our Santa Claus and hes never coming back.
